REFINISH VS REPLACE

Why Refinishing Beats Replacement for Most Kitchens

Full kitchen cabinet replacement in Central Florida typically runs $15,000 to $40,000 before you even touch countertops or backsplash. Refinishing your existing cabinets typically runs $4,000 to $8,000 and delivers the same visual transformation. Here's how the two compare.

Refinishing makes sense if

  • Your cabinet layout already works for you
  • The boxes and frames are structurally sound
  • You want a completely different color or finish
  • You'd rather keep your existing countertops and backsplash
  • You want to be back in your kitchen in a week, not two months

Replacement makes sense if

  • You want a different layout
  • Cabinets are structurally damaged beyond repair
  • You're gutting the entire kitchen anyway

For most Central Florida kitchens we look at, refinishing is the right call. We'll tell you honestly if it isn't.

PROCESS

How Cabinet Refinishing Works

Six steps from first message to walking back into your kitchen.

01

Free In-Home Consultation

Send a message. We come out within one business day, measure your cabinets, count doors and drawers, look at your existing finish, and bring physical color samples. Written quote same day.

02

Prep and Removal

We remove all doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, label everything so it goes back exactly where it came from, and set up containment or an off-site spray booth so overspray never touches your countertops or floors.

03

Deep Cleaning and Sanding

Cabinets get years of grease, cooking oil, and cleaner buildup. We degrease every surface, then sand to give the primer something to bite. This step is what separates a finish that lasts from one that chips in six months.

04

Spray Application

Professional-grade cabinet coatings sprayed in multiple thin coats with full cure time between each. Spray gives a factory-quality finish. Brushing cabinets is faster and cheaper, and it looks like it.

05

Cure and Reinstall

Doors and drawers cure fully before we reinstall. We hang everything back in place, install any new hardware you chose, and do detail touch-ups on cabinet boxes.

06

Walkthrough and Signoff

You walk through the kitchen with us before we invoice. Anything not right gets fixed. Nothing gets invoiced until you're satisfied with it.

MATERIALS

Paint Brands We Use and Why

Cabinet refinishing requires cabinet-specific coatings, not wall paint. The finish needs to cure hard, resist fingerprints and cleaners, wipe clean without leaving streaks, and hold up to years of daily use. Wall paint on cabinets is the reason so many DIY kitchen paint jobs fail within a year.

We primarily use Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel and ProClassic. Both are water-based hybrid alkyd formulations designed for cabinets and trim. They spray beautifully, cure hard, and don't yellow over time.

For premium projects we also work with Milesi, a professional-grade Italian lacquer used in high-end custom cabinet shops. It's more expensive, cures faster, and delivers the closest thing to factory finish you can get in a home refinish.

You approve the exact product, sheen, and color before we buy anything.

FAQ

Cabinet Refinishing FAQs

How much does cabinet refinishing cost?

Most cabinet projects range from $3,500 for a small kitchen to $10,000 for a large kitchen with premium finishes. Bathroom vanities typically start at $800. Pricing depends on door count, cabinet material, and finish selection. Every project is quoted individually after a free in-home consultation.

How long does cabinet refinishing take?

Most kitchens take 5 to 7 days start to finish. Smaller projects like a bathroom vanity typically take 3 to 4 days. You'll get a specific timeline with your written quote.

Can you refinish any cabinet material?

Yes. We refinish solid wood, plywood, MDF, laminate, and thermofoil cabinets. Each material requires a different primer and prep approach, and we specify the right one for what you have. Cabinets already painted are usually easier, not harder, to refinish.

Do we need to move out during the project?

No. We set up containment or use an off-site spray booth so overspray never reaches your living space. You'll be without cabinet doors for a few days in the middle of the project, but you can still use your kitchen for basic cooking and access to what's inside.

Will the finish hold up?

Yes, when it's done correctly. The difference between a cabinet refinish that lasts 10 years and one that chips in 6 months is prep and product selection. We sand, degrease, and prime properly, and we use cabinet-specific coatings (not wall paint) that cure hard and resist daily wear.

What if my cabinets are already painted?

Painted cabinets are usually easier to refinish. We sand the existing finish, address any peeling or chipping, prime for adhesion, and spray your new color. Most previously-painted cabinets look better after refinishing than they did originally.

Can you change cabinet color from dark to light?

Yes. Dark-to-light color changes are one of the most common cabinet projects we do in Central Florida. It requires more coats and careful primer selection to prevent bleed-through, but the transformation is dramatic. We'll walk you through the extra prep involved before we start.

Do you paint the inside of the cabinets?

Cabinet interiors are an optional add-on. Most homeowners skip them because they're not visible unless you leave doors open, and the savings are meaningful. If you want them done, we spray them at the same time as the exteriors for a fully consistent look.

Can you replace damaged doors or drawer fronts?

Yes. If a door or drawer front is damaged beyond repair, we can order a replacement match (or close match) and refinish it alongside the rest. Match availability depends on your cabinet style and age.

Do you install new hardware?

Yes. New pulls, knobs, and hinges can be installed as part of the project. If you're changing hardware size or style, we'll fill and reprime old holes so the finish looks factory-clean. Hardware itself is billed separately based on what you choose.
